چکیده

There’s a lot missing from the speech of a typical two-year-old. This in itself is of no great interest to the linguist—after all, there are lots of other things that two-year-olds aren’t that great at. What makes the two-year-old more interesting to the linguist is that there are striking regularities in what gets missed out where. This paper takes a cross-linguistic look at regularities of omission in twoyear-old syntax and morphology, primarily at so-called ‘root infinitives’ (Weverink 1989; Wexler 1994; Rizzi 1994b), and argues for the following main conclusions:

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian

Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...

An Applied Linguistics Look at the Linguistic Comparison of Nominal Group Complexity between Two Samples of a Genre

The roles and effects of changes in syntax on comprehension and processing effort, and the relationships between these two, comprise a large and separate field of inquiry, with the general belief now in place that such changes and variations bring about varied psycholinguistic and discursive implications for comprehension, manifesting themselves differently in different genres. The current study...

The prosody of embedded coordinations in German and Hindi

This paper reports a cross-linguistic investigation into the syntax-prosody mapping in German and Hindi. For both languages, comparable speech production experiments were carried out, using ambiguous coordination structures with four names in different syntactic conditions. Pitch contours and duration values were compared at syntactic boundaries of the different coordination structures within a...

Investigating Syntax Comprehension in Persian-speaking Children With Autism

Objectives: Grammar is frequently considered as the strength in the language profile of autistic children. Only a few studies have investigated the grammatical knowledge of these children. There are some research studies, but they are inconclusive, and less is known about the linguistic characteristics of children with autism in some languages, like Persian. Thus, the present study aimed at the...

Cross-Linguistic Differences at the Syntax-Discourse Interface in Off- and On-line L2 Performance

Studies of ultimate attainment in adult second-language (L2) acquisition report a disjunction between success in acquiring the syntax of the target language (TL), on the one hand, and persistent difficulties at the interfaces of syntax with other grammatical modules, e.g. discourse-pragmatics, on the other. However, there continues to be debate as to whether these difficulties arise from devian...
